British casinos are re-writing the rulebook for seasonal celebrations
With Christmas and New Year upon us, many are searching for unique venues to host pre-Christmas celebrations, office parties, and get-togethers. Increasingly, casinos have become a popular choice for such occasions, and for a very good reason.
As executive chairman of the country’s biggest and busiest entertainment and casino venue, the Hippodrome in Leicester Square, London, I can’t in all honesty think why anyone would go anywhere else, given that we offer such a unique, vibrant, safe, and diverse entertainment experience.
And we’re not alone. Casinos the length and breadth of the country are investing, re-imagining and in doing so, attracting a raft of new customers for an experiential night out. The sector has moved into a fifth gear and eagerly awaits the vast possibilities presented with the current gambling review.
I’ve witnessed first-hand the transformation of how casinos are perceived and embraced in the UK since opening the Hippodrome in July 2012. The stigma (was it snobbery or jealousy? who knows) is fast disappearing and meeting at a casino for a night out is becoming a new choice within the entertainment infrastructure of our evolving high street. There’s a raft of reasons for this.
The casino industry has worked hard to redefine its image, shedding outdated stereotypes and becoming places of entertainment for all. The Hippodrome, which has been open how for over 12 years, exemplifies this evolution. We’ve created an environment where anyone can feel welcome—whether they are seasoned gamers, casual diners, or simply looking to enjoy the festive spirit.
Central to this transformation is safety. With robust security measures in place, including highly trained staff and extensive surveillance, casinos have become some of the safest venues for a night out. They boast a lower incidence of drunken behaviour compared to traditional nightlife venues, creating a more controlled and enjoyable atmosphere. This is particularly reassuring for women, who can feel confident attending solo or in groups.
Modern casinos are no longer just about the roulette wheel or poker tables. They are vibrant social hubs offering a multitude of entertainment options. At the Hippodrome, our nine bars, including themed and rooftop options, serve as ideal spots for Christmas cocktails and partying. Our two award-winning restaurants—Heliot Steak House, renowned for its USDA prime steaks, and the Asian-inspired Chop Chop which after just two years now sits within the top 20 on Trip Advisor’s top restaurants list- provide truly world class dining experiences, and seasonally tailored to boot.
The Hippodrome also hosts one of the West End’s most successful song and dance productions – Magic Mike Live - now in its sixth record-breaking year, and playing to unprecedented 95% houses. It brings a unique dynamic to the Hippodrome, and attracts an audience of which the vast majority have never visited a casino before. I believe that’s part of my job, to show that casinos are different now, for the broadest possible audience. And that above everything else, they’re fun.
Another reason casinos have gained a new popularity is the surge in group-oriented gaming, which can make for a unique Christmas party. The Hippodrome is home to the UK’s largest poker deck, attracting enthusiasts and beginners alike; my director of poker Kerryjane Craigie has done more in the last five years for women players than in the previous 50. Poker has evolved into a social activity, perfect for team-building or friendly competition during Christmas outings. For those less familiar with gaming, our staff offers guidance to ensure everyone feels included.
Casinos also provide an opportunity for those who may not wish to gamble to enjoy all the other experiences – chief among these at the Hippodrome is actually being in one of London’s most celebrated, iconic and historical venues. Where else can boast a century of entertainment that includes performances from Chaplin to Houdini, Dame Julie Andrews to Judy Garland. We never forget the entertainment roots of the building – which celebrates its 125th anniversary next year.
As we embrace the spirit of togetherness this holiday season, planning an office party, a gathering with friends, or a unique family outing, consider the versatility, safety, and excitement that a modern casino can offer.
