Backing jobs, high streets and local communities
Britain’s betting shops support more than 36,000 jobs and remain an important part of high streets across the country.
They are places where people work, meet and socialise, while supporting local economies and British sport.
But the sector is under growing pressure. Since 2019, more than 3,000 betting shops have closed, with over 16,000 jobs lost.
Further tax increases would put thousands more jobs and businesses at risk.
Behind every shop are real people
Back Our Betting Shops is about telling the stories behind the statistics - the employees, customers and communities who rely on a thriving, regulated betting industry.
Back the jobs. Back the high street. Back our betting shops.
What local people are saying
Polling by Opinium in Makerfield shows the role betting shops continue to play in local communities.
- 54% say betting shops contribute to community life, while job losses are the biggest concern when businesses disappear from the high street.
- 34% worry about lost jobs.
- 23% worry about empty shops.
Economic contribution
Britain’s betting shops make a major contribution to the economy, high streets and local communities.
They pay around £1bn a year in direct tax, plus a further £60m in business rates to local councils.
That contribution cannot be taken for granted. Backing betting shops means backing jobs, high streets and the communities they serve.
