PREVENTING UNDERAGE GAMBLING

The internet has become an integral part of everyday life for most people including children and young adults.

Nearly nine in ten UK adults and 99% of 12 to 15-year-olds are online. As the online gambling sector continues to grow, the accessibility and impact of gambling on children and young people has rightly been a growing concern.

We are determined to do everything in our power to prevent underage gambling and are working with members to support a range of tools to safeguard children and young people.

DELIVERING ON OUR COMMITMENT

£10 Million to Fund Gambling Harm Prevention Programme for Young People

Through the Betting and Gaming Council, members are providing £10M to support an independently created and evidence-led programme of education, training and support for 11-19-year olds in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Delivered by YGAM and GamCare, the Young People’s Gambling Harm Prevention Programme will ensure that young people receive at least one gambling awareness session during their secondary education. Teachers, youth workers and other professionals will also have access to information about the risks of betting, how to identify betting-related harm and where to get help.

Information will also be made available to parents and families about young people’s gambling, how to keep them safe and where they can be referred for help and support.

And under-18s who are at risk of, or have developed, a problem with gambling – or are affected by gambling of someone close to them – will have access to age-appropriate treatment.

SAFEGUARDING CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE FROM GAMBLING HARM

Our aims

  • Increase the number of competent professionals nationally who educate children and young people on the risks related to gambling.
  • Educate 11 to 19-year-olds about the risks associated with problem gambling.
  • Motivate banks to introduce barriers and blocks to prevent under-18s from gambling online.
  • Introduce AdTech to prevent under-18s from seeing gambling advertising online.

Our progress

In our first year of operation, we have worked with our members to:

  • Provide £10m of funding for a national education programme designed and delivered by relevant experts for children and young people over the next four years.
  • Tighten controls set up in the Gambling Industry Code for Socially Responsible Advertising, including the blacklisting of online search terms likely to attract under 18s, stricter enforcement of the watershed for advertising and sponsorship, clearer labelling of products as 18+ and stronger and more prominent safer gambling messaging.
  • Launch a review of how the use of advertising technology (AdTech) could contribute to harm-reduction, and better prevent under-18s and other vulnerable groups from being exposed to gambling advertising online.

Going forward, we will:

  • Work with the financial services industry to block gambling transactions on accounts held by under-18s.
  • Work with advertising bodies to explore advertising tehnology (AdTech) to prevent under-18s seeing gambling adverts online.
  • Work with the financial services industry to block gambling transactions on accounts held by under-18s.
  • Continue to develop policies aimed at 18-24s such as those already developed around AdTech and high value customers.
